CHILDREN'S BOOK
My initial prompt was very free-flowing and independent; write 20-40 pages about something you are passionate about. I chose to write a children's book about self-love, which is an important thing for kids to learn at a young age and continue applying throughout the rest of their lives. As of May 2018, my book is in the process of being professionally published.
Snoove Snouts
In a village called Snooville,
In a land far away,
Lived a small little Snoove,
Whose name was Snoove May.
Snoov May had a snout,
As every Snoove does,
And she loved her wee nose,
Just the way that it was.
In fact, every Snoove
Had a glorious snout,
Every snout was unique,
(That’s what Snooves are about)
Some snouts were stocky,
And some snouts were slim,
Some snouts were giant!
And others were prim.
Snooves walked on the streets,
And strutted their noses,
And they all loved themselves,
From their heads to their toeses!
That’s the way it remained,
Up high in Snooville,
Every Snoove was accepted,
Atop that great hill.
But one day things changed,
For worse or for better,
When the mailman arrived,
And brought forth a letter.
“Attention, dear snooves”
The letter did say,
“Arriving tomorrow is
Miss Holly Kay!”
“Holly Kay?” said the Snooves,
With a glimmer of doubt,
“But she is so famous,
She’ll never come out!”
Holly Kay was an actress,
So pretty and pure,
And coming to Snooville
For her next movie tour!
In the following morning,
Snooves jumped from their snoozes,
And ran to the square,
Forgetting their shoeses!
Excitement arose,
As the Snooves filled the square,
And sure as the sun,
Holly Kay was right there!
Snoove mouths opened wide,
As they gawked at the sight,
Her dress was so perfect,
Her smile so bright!
But what silenced the Snooves
Was above her white pout-
Miss Holly Kay Snoove
Had a glamorous snout!
This snout was amazing,
So round and so prim,
When the Snooves saw that snout,
Their smiles did dim.
“What a beautiful snout!”
One Snoove mumbled in awe,
“That snout is just perfect;
Not a single flaw!”
And the perfection, it nested
In the Snooves tiny hearts,
And it made them consider
Their own snouty parts.
Their snouts were not flawless,
Their snouts were not grand,
And they now saw their snouts
As entirely bland.
When all Snoove May’s friends,
Got home from the square,
They ran to their bedrooms,
And plopped themselves there.
They looked in the mirror,
Turned their heads side to side,
“I hate my gross snout!”
The Snoove kids then cried.
But Snoove May was different,
She got home and stated,
“A simple plain snout,
Can never be hated!”
“I love this wee nose,
With all of my heart,
And it’s simply perfection,
A true work of art!”
But in the weeks that would follow,
Things started to change,
And the things around her
Got a little bit strange.
In all of the papers,
And on the TV,
Miss Holly Kay Snoove
Was all you could see!
And the vision of Holly,
And her wonderful nose,
Made the Snooves’ self doubts
Fester and grow.
All day, the Snooves sat,
In front of the mirror,
And the flaws on their snouts,
Became a lot clearer.
And this made the Snooves sad,
As they plainly could tell,
Their noses were awful,
And Holly’s was swell!
The Snooves tried their best,
To fix up their snouts,
They poked and they prodded,
But their noses stayed stout.
They bought special products,
Fake noses and gels,
And perfumes that said they
Had snout shaping smells!
But one Snoove loved her nose,
(it was little Snoove May),
It wasn’t unblemished,
But that was OK!
Weeks seemed to pass,
And the craze kept on growing,
But the Snooves still weren’t happy,
And that surely was showing.
The once happy Snooves,
Lost themselves to the trend,
They moped in their houses,
And stopped being friends!
They hid in their houses,
And prodded their snouts,
They turned from their neighbors,
And never came out.
No snout was deemed fit,
To be seen in the square,
Only Holly’s was perfect;
Theirs couldn’t compare.
The happy, fun village,
Was now a sad place,
The Snooves trudged around,
With a frown on each face.
They didn’t feel pretty,
They didn’t feel grand,
And every Snoove
Felt totally bland.
And Snoove May was sick of it!
She loved her old town!
Good friends and great neighbors,
Were always around!
She just had to fix it,
She knew in her heart,
This snout fad was tearing
Poor Snooville apart!
So away to the square,
Snoove May marched so proud,
And the snout-loving Snooves
All gathered around.
“Snoove May, what is that!”
They’d say with a sneer,
“Your snout is so ugly!
Get some snout shaping gear!”
And Snoove May still stood tall,
And said to the crowd,
“I love my own snout!
Is that not allowed?”
“All your snouts were just perfect,
Each one was unique,
And being so different
Was so very chic!”
“Your beautiful noses,
Are what make us Snooves!
We celebrate differences,
It’s just what we do!”
“The way to be pretty,
Is not just one way!
So what if we don’t look like
Miss Holly Kay?”
“She may be fantastic,
But so are we,
And loving yourself,
Is simply the key!”
“If you want to be beautiful,
Here’s my advice,
Look in the mirror,
And don’t think twice.”
“If you love what you find,
That’s all that you need,
From your sad ways of thinking,
You’ll surely be freed!”
So the Snooves all went home,
Inspired by May,
They looked in the mirror,
And the hate went away!
They came out of their houses,
With no fear in their hearts,
And looked all around,
At their old counterparts.
Everyone looked so different,
But that wasn’t bad,
Every Snoove looked
Incredibly glad!
They talked and they laughed,
As they all gathered round,
And hugged every neighbor,
With the love that they’d found.
And as Snoove May walked by,
She heard all the chatter,
And grinned at their happiness,
(The only thing that did matter).
And something real magical,
Happened that day,
The Snooves loved themselves,
And that’s the way it would stay!
